Injection of allergens is the time tested way to decrease sensitivity to airborne allergens. A new approach involves absorbing allergens across the lining of the mouth. Grastek, a grass pollen pill is the first approved pill for this purpose. Candidates for this form of therapy are discussed.

NAsacort AQ is a nasal steroid spray

Nasal steroid sprays are effective for allergies, but must be used with caution because of potentially severe side effects. These include headaches, nose bleeds cataracts and glaucoma. Consult an allergist before considering long term use of this medication.

Food allergies appear in infancy but it is unclear how they begin. Our current understanding of allergic reactions requires an initial exposure, with symptoms developing upon re-exposure. For infants, the source of the initial exposure is not clear. Researchers have found food allergens in the beds of infants, perhaps providing a new explanation.
